Before using any power tool, wear safety goggles or safety glasses with shields which have been approved nationally. If there are many wood chips or dusty conditions, make sure you wear a dust mask. If you are working in a noisy environment, wear ear protection such as ear plugs. Those using power tools should refrain from wearing loose clothing or any dangling jewelry that can catch on the tool. Make sure your hair is tied back and does not interfere with the power tools.
Woodworking machinery needs to be chosen very wisely. This is because while wood is hard, it is also a very fragile material to deal with. Cutting it the wrong way will not be correctable and it might lead to much material wastage. You must therefore get tools that cut with precision in order to advance in the trade. This is how you increase productivity and curb wastage.
With the marketplace being overwhelmed with numerous brands of power tools, it may turn out to be a daunting task, while filtering out the best one for your unique job role. Although, power tools are usually associated with technicians, pertaining to their routine dealings in complex operations, however, with increasing enthusiasm amongst people, regarding DIY projects, power tools are proactively being purchased by novices, like you and us.
Almost any tool is available now as a cordless or battery operated model; with the improvements in batteries that have been made over the past decade, there is really no need now to use tools with cords that just get in the way and can be dangerous hazards. NiCads and lithiums are the most popular with lithium taking the lead and being the primary battery being manufactured fo most tools now. The main complaint with lithiums is that when they run out of power the just stop with no warning. Some of the manufacturers like DeWalt have started to address this issue by adding battery fuel gauge indicators to give the operator an idea of how the battery is powering down; not all batteries have this feature yet. Some of the companies have made huge strides in how the batteries charge. For example, Makita has a built-in shock absorbing feature and a built-in memory chip in the battery to communicate with the Optimum Charger to allow for a more efficient charge during the charging process to optimize the battery's life by actively controlling the current, voltage, and temperature; the charger has a built-in fan to cool the battery to increase the battery's life. One point to note when using these newer lithium batteries is if they become extremely hot, allow them to cool back down, and watch out that they do not get so hot that they explode.
Sometimes you may want to just get away from some other situation, and having a project/job to do may just be the right thing at the right time. Wrapping your mind and body around something physical can be the temporary escape you need. Granted, its not gonna solve any problems, but it will allow you to get away for a while…and that may be all the time you need.
